Have you ever wondered how one “gets to God?” If so, you join many throughout the ages who have desired an encounter with the Holy One. Iconography is one journey, with prescribed steps, designed to help the participant encounter God. Said another way, iconography is a way to God. It is a window into another world, the world of the sacred. Writing an icon is akin to meditation…its own kind of spiritual discipline.
Writing these beautiful icons is possible for you. It is not necessary for you to be an artist. You will be taught the artistic techniques that you need. The spiritual meanings behind the techniques will be explained. This is the first of several mini-workshops. Subsequent mini-workshops will focus on such elements as: garments, scenes (nature) and buildings. If you are a beginner, once you have learned these techniques, you will be able to complete an entire icon. If you already paint icons, your skills will be improved by taking these mini-workshops. You will be learning in a small group environment. This is necessary so that you have the appropriate attention of the instructor. We will also follow the Covid guidelines as stipulated by St. Agnes Catholic Church.
In this mini-workshop, you will be working on either a practice board or appropriate watercolor paper. You will be taught the egg tempera technique using natural pigments.
You will be focusing on the face – skills include handling lines, roskrish, first and second highlights and floats. Roskrish spiritually represents chaos (no form) and is a dark application of pigments. Darkness is necessary to reveal light.
During the workshop, each student will create the image shown on the page.
